Utakura Hiko Hapori Trust

Introduction:

Rural communities like Utatewhanga face significant challenges in accessing reliable and affordable energy. Under the current retail supply model, whānau often rely on a single, expensive, and unreliable power provider, which limits our ability to make energy decisions that align with our community’s needs and values.

In response, Utakura Hiko Hapori Trust was established by Utakura 7 Incorporation and Utakura 7 Atawhai Trust to build partnerships with local marae and schools to establish a sustainable micro-solar energy generation system. This system, paired with an innovative community-based distribution model designed with our Project partner, Paua to the People, aims to harness untapped renewable energy, ensuring long-term power security, reducing energy costs, and providing greater control over our energy future.

This initiative not only strengthens mana motuhake but also upholds rangatiratanga, empowering our communities to take charge of their own resources. The energy generated will be used for local distribution or sale, providing financial relief from escalating power costs.

At the heart of this kaupapa are the principles of whanaungatanga and kotahitanga. This partnership aims to build both economic and environmental resilience, equipping our communities with the tools to become self-sufficient, adaptable, and prepared for the future. Whānau will no longer be passive recipients of energy decisions but active participants in a renewable energy economy that reflects our shared aspirations and values.
